Question

command+Z shortcut (Undo) does not work, Indesign specific

Hey everyone, my command+Z shortcut for »Undo« doesn't work in Indesign, and I can't find the source of error. The problem is Indesign-specific, because the rest of the Adobe programs work with command+Z, as do all other programs on my laptop. I already re-downloaded Indesign, set it up again, checked for missing links and am now at the end of my wits. Can somebody help me? :=) xx, clara

Hello @Vanesnet

I’m sorry to hear you’re having similar trouble with InDesign. Would you mind trying the suggestions shared earlier here (https://community.adobe.com/questions-671/command-z-shortcut-undo-does-not-work-indesign-specific-895477?postid=3540108#post3540108) and checking if they help?

If the problem persists, share more details, such as the versions of the OS/InDesign installed, and the exact steps to replicate the problem, including a brief screen recording, so we can assist you further.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Anubhav

Yep, September 2026, and this is STILL happening, despite updating to Adobe’s latest update yesterday (version 21.5.1.73), which promised to fix this serious flaw. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to reset prefs just to get command+z to work again whilst doing artwork for a major UK supermarket. This is basic stuff Adobe...please fix this ASAP, once and for all, we all pay you enough for the software.

A user reported recently that they only have the Undo issue when the Google Drive app is running. I wonder if it applies in your case? Other users didn’t confirm the same experience so far.

Thanks for the reply, but we don’t use Google Drive at all. We are a data secure company, and are only able to use Bynder for external storage.

What a non-surprise! Yet again, Adobe manages to push everyone to alternative software packages.

Hi Steve and also hi Clara from one year ago,

It really is necessary to ask what exact version you are on and what exact version of the macOS you are using. Many times the problem is related to those two vital bits of information. Without getting those basic questions answered, it is hard to help troubleshoot a problem that really is solvable with an array of reset techniques. To explore on your own, here is a compendium of troubleshooting advice.

Hi @Clara27417331uzcs,

Could you please confirm the version of InDesign you're using and the operating system details? That’ll help us dig a little deeper into this.

In the meantime, I hope Robert’s suggestion helped. If you're running any Font Manager or have any extra plug-ins installed with InDesign, try temporarily disabling them. To further rule out third-party conflicts, you can also try starting your system in Safe Mode and see if the issue still occurs:

macOS: https://adobe.ly/3EnUpAJ
Windows: https://adobe.ly/4ldhlmS

As Bill mentioned, please check if Edit > Undo works, and if it’s just the shortcut that isn’t responding.

You can also try creating a new admin user profile and test the shortcut there to help isolate the issue:
New user on macOS: https://adobe.ly/4ljduEO
New user on Windows: https://adobe.ly/4cu06di

Let us know how it goes.

hi again, thanks for all your input, sadly nothing solved the problem until now. I'll retrace what I did, first of all, i have the newest InDesign Version, and a MacOs Sequoia 15 that i bought 1,5 months ago.

  • i reset „preferences on quit” on indesign
  • „edit>undo” is working to undo my last action, it is ONLY the key command that is not working
  • i am not using any third party plug-ins in neither Indesign nor in my entire operating system
  • i also don’t use a fontmanager
  • i also restarted my system in safe mode, and the issue is still occurring.
  • all other shortcuts are responding. and as mentioned all shortcuts including the key command „edit>undo” work in photoshop and illustrator, so the problem must be indesign specific.

thank you so much for your help, i really appreciate it since i don't know how to solve this seemingly small problem which is nontheless disrupting my workflow.

another maybe important thing is, i am sharing my creative cloud with my sister, and the issue is only popping up on my Indesign, not on hers.

@Clara27417331uzcs

Do you run any extra software, together with InDesign - like a FontManager - or have any extra plugins installed in InDesign?

Is it just the key command that is not working or is Edit>Undo also not working to undo your last action? Are you using any third party plug-ins in either your InDesign or operating system? If so try disabling them and see if the problem persists.

Also check your keyboard shortcuts. Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts... and be sure the shortcut is properly assigned if you are using a custom set.

Try resetting your preferences:

InDesign 19.3 and newer go to Preferences > General > and click on "Reset Preferences on Quit" and then quit and restart.

Or
Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.
