Compability problems between different versions - LOCKED

Our designer (located in Poland) is using the Creative Suite 5.5, we (located in Germany) are using an actual Cloud version of InDesign. The problem is, that we cannot open files designed by our designer, make modifications and send them back to him. That makes it very difficult to create a catalogue e. g. where we are doing the text and our designer the design and final arrangement.

What can we do to solve this problem?

Make sure to both use the same version. That ought to solve any and all problems

As you have found out, opening the CS5.5 files in your CC is (or should be) no problem at all, but getting the documents back is. Your designer doesn't need to do anything special for you to open their older file, but to get your files back you must save them as IDML, which can be opened in their older version. This is described in more detail in the Online Help: Open InDesign files in previous versions

The conversion via IDML is pretty much guaranteed to be 90% perfect – there are some inconsistencies, but it heavily depends on your exact workflow whether you are prone to run into problems with every project, or whether everything will go smoothly.

The only genuine answer is for the designer to have a Creative Cloud subscription (or at least a single-app subscription for InDesign).

If you save your CC files as IDML, they'll be able to open them in CS 5.5, but I'd strongly recommend against that as a workflow, especially with something as complex as a catalogue.
