Content hidden when switching display

This problem has been going on forever, but as I'm doing more and more work at the office and at home each week, this has become unbarable. Problem: 

If I use InDesign (current latest version) on my laptop, and then plug in my external screen, all content becomes "hidden", and the only way to get it back is to quit InDesign and start it again, opening up all files manually. 

The same then happens, when I remove my external display. So this happens twice per day. 

Any suggestions for how to solve this problem?
