Continued numbering not working in InDesign

Hi,

I have a numbered list with indented step details in two places. After the indented step details, I want the numbers to continue. In my case, the continued number starts at the number 2.  Can you tell me why this is happening?

See the example attached.

Thank you,

Julianna

Do you have appropriate levels assigned to each style (to the right on above screenshot)?

That worked! The first Indented Step was assigned to Level 1 instead of Level 2.  Thank you James!

That makes sense. I created a list name and assigned all four styles to that list. But that didn't change my numbering issues. I even removed the numbering and reapplied with no luck.

Hi James,

I'm not sure what you mean by 'assigned to the same list name'. Are you talking about what the style is Based on in the General tab? Or what the List is underneath List Type in the Bullets and Numbering tab?

Thanks again

In the Bullets/Numbering pane of each style in a list, the style for each level should be assigned to a common list name —

— with a different list name for each different list, if you have more than one list style in play.

Leaving this at [Default] is poor practice and can make it difficult for ID to continue interrupted numbering reliably.

Are all levels of the list paragraph styles assigned to the same list name? That's essential, and should never be left to the default list setting.
