Convert numbering to text

When i click on convert numbering to text to edit the numbers, the numbers get changed to bullet points.whys this happening

    Hi Don:

    We'll need a more information on your workflow to help you figure out why this isn't working. When I assign automatic paragraph numbers, and then right click them > Convert Numbering to Text:

    That's exactly what they do.

    Does this happen when the text is formatted with Paragraph Styles, or did you make the numbers just by applying numbers without creating a Paragraph Style.
