Converting footnotes to Endnotes in ID CC 2018

Hi,

I am happy that InDesign supports endnotes at last. Over the years I created a lot of books containing footnotes, which I want to convert to endnotes now [for new editions]. Looking through ID CC 2018 I cannot find automatic or semi-automatic conversion.

Is this feature somewhere hidden or not implemented, yet? If the latter, does anybody know a plug-in or script to do it; would be a bit tedious to do it one by one manually?

It's not implemented (the Endnotes feature is v1.0).

Does anybody know a way to get Endnote software exports into InDesign with footnotes or endnotes intact? Endnote seems to export to the reference number with a hard text (where n is a positive integer between square brackets) and no hyperlinking or MS Word Endnote intelligence.

Possibly off topic but Microsoft Word converts footnotes to endnotes and vice versa pretty effortlessly.  Acrobat exports to Word documents. Not sure if you can get the text into work with reference links intact that way, but if you can it's easy to go from there to endnotes and import into the latest INDD for linking endnotes.

The documentation for the new CC 2019 claims to effortless convert these notes to each other, either document wide or in a selection only. So (happy day!) no roundtrip is necessary, nor a script.

I got in touch with Peter and told him what happened. I used both this scripts to convert from footnotes to endnotes and back. About 90% of the hyperlinks lost their URLs in the process.

I would caution others about the use of these scripts. I just converted a document containing more than 500 footnotes to end notes. When I wasn't happy with the results, I went back and used the script to convert them back and lost the URL references to 90% of my hyperlinks. Now I have to go back five days and try to reconstruct all the changes I made…

Not ready for primetime.
