Converting InDesign document to newer version

Hi all, is it still relevant to convert your INDD file to IDML when upgrading the InDesign document to a newer version. Any thoughts on this? Pros? Cons?

IDML is important to open a file in an older versio, but any newer version can open INDD directly from the same or an older version.

IDML may help if you open a file, made with an ID version where 3rd party plugins were used, which are not available with your version, even if it is the same version.
