Converting old files causing InDesign to crash?

Hello all. I am in the process of updating a series of InDesign files that were originally created in 2007 and last updated in 2015. I have all original fonts, photos, and other files. So far, about one in three constantly crash, whether it's when I try and change a font or even try to copy or move a text box. It's extremely frustrating, but not all the files are giving me this issue. We just purchased an adobe package for my organization, so there never were any preferences to import on this network and the program is most up to date.

Do you think the crash is because the original files are so old? Could there be a way to remedy this, or should I just try and create an entirely new document for the ones that give me trouble?

Thanks in advance.

You could also try exporting the bad files as IDML files (which can sometimes clear up any inherent corruption) and then opening the IDMLs with your current version of InDesign. You would then save them as new InDesign files.

You can also try "stair-stepping" the updates. I believe 2007 would be about version CS3, so you can install the Creative Cloud version of InDesign CS6. If that opens, do a save-as and and IDML as Bill suggested. Try opening the new file into CC 2018.

Try to open them as a copy.
