Converting to EPUB from Print

Hello,

We currently publish a print magazine in In Design, but we are now needing to publish a digital version online for subscriptions/back ordersssss.

I noticed that simply exporting the document as an E Pub did not convert everything as it should (Text and fonts were larger etc.)

Can someone please advise the easiest way that this can be accomplished without having to recreate the whole magazine? I am having such a hard time with this.

Thank you in advance for any advise!

As you can see from the various responses, there are a number of solutions, none perfect – each has advantages (features) and disadvantages. You have to choose which features you need and whether you want to offer your magazine in more than one digital format.

There are two kinds of ePub - Reflowable ePub; only suitable for documents with simple text and a few images and FXL ePub suitable for documents with higher design values.  The end-user needs a reader or device to access them.

PDF is the easiest digital format to produce from the print version.

There's Publish Online, easy to produce from the print version, but you can't monetise it.

There are third party applications, such as issuu Try Issuu and https://www.magplus.com and in5 Export HTML5 from InDesign with in5 - Home

Hi. You can export to ePub (Fixed Layout) or export using the Publish Online option.

Are you Exporting to EPUB (Fixed Layout)? This will export your layout pretty much as it is designed for print. Regular EPUBs (Reflowable) totally ignore your layout, so that could be the issue.

You may also want to take a look at In5: Export HTML5 from InDesign with in5 - Home This is a fantastic Plugin for Indesign that exports totally interactive HTML5 directly from your InDesign Layout.

Have you taken a look at Publish Online? There's a Publish Online button toward the upper-right of your InDesign window. It will export your layout (with lots of possible interactive features included) to Adobe's online servers.
