Question

Copy > Paste Table within text box — only carries over text

Previously, in InDesign CC 2018, selecting a table and copy > pasting it would result in another table with the same information in it. This was very useful when flowing text and tables across multiple pages. Upgrading to InDesign CC 2019 and following the same steps now results in the text being pasted, but not as a table. The newly pasted text is tabbed as if separating out columns, and contains separate lines for each row that was copied.

Attached image shows what happens when a table within a text box gets copy > pasted currently.

Is there a way to copy > paste tables like before? Currently running InDesign 14.0.3, Mojave 10.14.6.

Thanks!

Hi Erik,

I cannot see this behavior with InDesign CC 2019 version 14.0.3 on Windows 10.

Are there any 3rd-party plugins installed on your side? Some specialities with keyboard shortcuts perhaps on Mac OS X 10.14.6?

Or a helper app that is recording clipboard contents?

That was a thought of mine too, but this is a clean install of both the OS and InDesign. We don't currently use any 3rd party plugins for design software, or anything that would affect the software, shortcuts, or the clipboard.

The only way the entire setup differs from a stock model are security features that IT installs, but these haven't changed and were never an issue before. IT was one of the first people I contacted, and the security features wouldn't be working with this part of the system.  I'm hoping it's an issue with OSX Mojave, and fixes itself with an install of Catalina.

Hi Erik: What am I missing? In the gif below I select a table in one file, navigate to a second file and paste. This is InDesign 14.0.3.

This is not a result I'm seeing with InDesign. Showing the Clipboard reveals it's being copied correctly, but pasting results in text only.

Have you tried copying the table character? That would be a workaround of sorts because it should work either way (and does here). Have you tried a preferences reset?

Found a workaround (sort of):

InDesign now treats a copy > paste as a character dump, but doesn’t preserve the fact that it’s in a table. Copying a table and opening the clipboard shows it’s being copied as a table correctly, but InDesign doesn’t like it being put back inline that way. The trick is now to select the table and go up to the menu and “Edit > Duplicate”. This makes a duplicate table, although it makes it directly after the table you’re trying to duplicate. Still not able to directly duplicate a table from page 3 to page 7, but it’s something at least.

After contacting multiple people to have them try it out, including Adobe Support, this looks like a "feature" that was removed in CC2019. Removed with no option to turn it back on.

Copy and Paste. Was a feature. That was removed.
