Copying an Indesign book document

First off, Happy New Year to everyone around the world, or maybe across the world.

Here's my question:

I have an InDesign book, made of 30 separate documents (chapters).
It has 31 images in it. For print I have had to make the images in
B&W because the print cost for color leaves no profit margin for sales.
I can however export it as an EPUB (electronic) with color because
the cost for this is very low and there is a decent profit margin.

My question is this: can I "copy and save" the B&W version, create
a new folder for this document, then change the images to color
images, save that and export it as an EPUB?

Or will this somehow "confuse" InDesign as to which version it was
familiar with, location, name, etc. and then freeze or stall, without
my being able to close it out or cancel an action as it as done in
the past?

Or should I change the images to color in the B&W version, then "save as"
the new color version, but not save the edited B&W so that it will revert
to the B&W pre-edited version when I close it out?

Thanks in advance

You.can make the indd file with color ontent and export to convert to an output b&w profile to  create a b&w pdf and you can export the same file with a. Color  profile in  color.

You could Package the B&W book, then convert the new book to color, but it's not good practice to have multiple copies of the same document, (in case of revisions). In addition to Rob's suggestion, you could have a B&W and color layers for each document and toggle them on or off for each version.

What is the difference between "package" and "export"?

How does one "convert" a B&W book to color, have layers of color so that

I could toggle back and forth between them? Would this mean I could export one

as a PDF B&W for print and the other I could export as a PDF with color for print?

Since my final version, after many proof-reads, contains B&W images and I need

the same book with color images, just how do I do this?

Thanks for your response.

What is the difference between "package" and "export"?

Package gathers the document, fonts, and assets into a folder, which could be sent to a printer. Export (to PDF Print) converts the document into a printable PDF. Usually thats what a printer wants, unless you need them to edit/correct your InDesign doc

Also, when you Export to a Gray space set your Appearance of Black Exporting preference to Output All Blacks as Rich Black otherwise your 100 Black text might export as a black percentage

And set Color Conversion to Convert to Destintion not Convert to Destination (Preserve Numbers)

Hi @M.E.310814321c2q , Can you provide the printer a PDF? You can make a conversion to a Gray space on a PDF export.
