Create Thumbnails for Content - InDesign

Hello everyone,

Is there a way to create a thumbnail in InDesign containing selected content from the same document, AND a different document within the same book, that the thumbnail will be located?

Instead of using an inter-manual link that lead users to the section where the instructions/information is, I'd like to add a thumbnail so users can click it and the selected instructions/information will appear in a pop-up without losing their spot in the manual.

(FYI, I am using Adobe InDesign 2019 14.0.02 x64.)

Thank you in advance.

Hi there,

In addition to the suggestions shared above, you may also refer to this video tutorial: Indesign CS5 Thumbnail with Image - YouTube.

HI Jessica:

You can use File > Export to export an InDesign page as a JPEG or PNG. Reducing the size will make it a thumbnail. You can add that image to a document, convert it to a button and set up a show/hide field.

There's also a script that Marijan Tompa (Tomaxxi) wrote some time ago that takes thumbnails that are saved with an InDesign file and exports them as jpgs: Extract file preview stored in Adobe XMP data | IndiSnip [InDesign® Snippets]

If the answer wasn't in my post, perhaps it might be on my blog at colecandoo!
