Created a book in Indesign 9 yrs ago...Missing graphics in new version
Created a cookbook in ID nine years ago when I open now missing tons of graphics. Is there a way to recover without redoing so much?

One recovery method we've used in similar situations.
It's messy, but it does recover serviceable versions of the graphics. We use it as a "last resort."
With either of the 2 methods below you will get:
Method 1:
Method 2:
Given that this is a book with many images, here's another way to recover all of the graphics from a PDF (it's best done on Windows but we've used it with mixed results on Mac):
Note:
If this is a long document, you don't want to end up with one humongous Word.docx file; it will be too big for your computer to process.
If that's the case, break up the original PDF into smaller sections of the book, such as frontmatter, chapter1, etc.
You can do that quickly: select the pages from the Thumbnails panel, right-click on the pages, and choose Extract Pages.
And as my colleagues above mentioned, this could have been avoided if InDesign's "Package" utility had been used years ago to archive the project with all of its fonts and graphics.
