Creating a character style that applies Italics to fonts that have different names for italics.

This is a problem that has bugged me for a while. I define a character style called "italics" which sets the font style to "Italics". However, not every font uses the word "Italics" for their Italics. Some have "Regular Italics" some have "Medium Italics" and so on. Is there any way to set a character style to select multiple styles? 'Italics' OR 'Regular Italics' OR 'Medium Italics'.

Or do I just have to memorize which font has which styles and set up multiple character styles?

Thanks!

No. InDesign can only apply italics when there is an italic character set included and installed with the base font, so the Character Style must also be specific to the given member of the family.

Well, I wouldn't say you have to memorize anything. It's just a matter of being mindful of the font(s) used in the project at hand and thoughtfully setting and applying styles accordingly. No project should contain so many fonts that you would get lost in a sea of variants.

I create textbooks for kids. They use a wide variety of fonts. Many are decorative and thus use a wide range of names for the Italic font. As I go through and thoughtfully apply styles, I will need to create It, Reg-Ital, Obl, Reg-Obl, Book-Ital, Book-Obl, and Med-Iral. That involves memorization.

I agree, it would be great to map all those tags to a meta-italics, but there is no such possibility. There would be more applications for this as just using tons of fonts in a document and having to create different styles for the same italics apperance. You could have a similar need for bold, but there it is less dramatic.
