Creating an InDesign book that also retains individual docs

Question

I have a client that is creating a book from 24 individual documents, each ranging from 3-5 pages. I've got her set up with the Book palette, it's all working great - the page numbers are numbering consecutively just like she wants, ToC is working, etc.

The problem we are finding - she needs to be able to occassionally use one of the docs as a standalone, and we can't figure out how to do so the page numbers start at one.

Further explanation of what they are wanting to do: it's a collection of job profiles across the entire company, that will go into one comprehensive book. When they are interviewing for a position, they'd like to be able to easily print just that individual job profile, with the page number starting at 1. But any time they open an individual doc, pages are numbered as it falls in the book. As a temporary workaround, I've been having them create a copy of the individual doc and restart the numbering - however they'd like to keep just one set of individual docs, so that when any changes are made they only need to be made in one place.

Hi @JennA1101:

She can open the stand-alone file, and manually reset the page numbering to 1 and print it. Then close without saving.

Or if she's working on the file and needs to save it, when she goes back to the book window, she'll see that it is re-starting at 1. That can be her reminder to set the numbering back to Automatic Page Numbering and then in the Book window panel menu > Update Numbering > Update all Numbers.

My book windows are fluid so I'm already in the habit of scanning down the page numbers whenever I have one open—she just needs to keep an eye on it too.
