Creating pop-ups with buttons/events_HELP

I'm working on a 250pg catalog that has pop-ups on a dozen pages. There might be 5 or 6 on one page. There is a "click" button on a catalog image, which triggers the pop-up (another placed image), a "close" button, and a mask behind these two. I have been given an indd to follow, and its exported interactive pdf. Theirs works. When I export mine as an interactive pdf, it fails.

In my version the "close" button is behind the pop-up, virtually cutting it in half. The button is a simple circle with an X in it, on a separate layer below the pop-ups.

Does it make a difference in what order I create these elements or their actions?

Or any ideas on what's going wrong?

Thanks much.

Pat

How are you creating these effects? It should work if you use show / hide buttons but I warn you...beyond Acrobat or Reader on a desktop, that will be nothing short of a crapshoot. That includes browsers and mobile devices.

I wouldn't even bother with it: https://www.boblevine.us/its-okay-to-say-no-to-interactive-pdf/

Thanks for the advice. This is what the client wants.

All the tuts I've searched make it seem easy peasy though tedious.

I know at least one person has done it. I will reach out to them and hopefully they can say where I made a wrong turn.

Report back when you've done your research and decided how you're going to proceed.

(You may find that a number of these effects depend on Flash and this  feature had now become obolete and doesn't appear as an option in the latest version of InDesign –  2020.)

What kind of output are you trying to create? PDF? Fixed-layout EPUB? Reflowable EPUB? Publish Online? HTML?

Then we can help answer your questions.

These won't work with Intearctive PDFs – you can only use successfully simple hyperlinks.

Have a look instead at InDesign's Publish Online or in5 https://ajarproductions.com/pages/products/in5/
