Cross Reference HL error

Maybe this is a simple one, but it's a little frightening right now:

I have a 110 page book file with quite a few page references cross-referencing over to the other files.

All was well untill one of my last production steps, which was to make a layer for the international version on each page (duplicate the UK layer and change phone numbers and prices to the new country).

Now all my cross refs are showing HL errors, <?> instead of the page number, as the original UK version is in a hidden layer. How can I resolve that so I can creat the international version?? Can tell InDesign to accept the cross refs from the hidden layer?

Thanks for any help!

…The cross reference linked to a text anchor on a layer of the same name on a different document, in the same book.

I created a new layer by duplicating Layer 1 called "Layer 2" in all the documents, and need to make one PDF of all docs on Layer 1 (Layer 2 hidden) and another with all docs on Layer 2 (Layer 1 hidden)

When I hide Layer 1, all cross references now show "HL" in the cross-reference panel, <?> instead of the page number.

Ah! I think, that's the most important info to trace the issue: Target is in a different document.

That may be the core issue. Any chance, that you can manage to put all linked pages to one single document?

Have to do some tests to verify the problem.

As a workaround you could try to set the invisible layers to visible again and instead use non-printing.

Uwe

All the documents had 1 layer, "Layer 1".

The cross reference linked to a text anchor on a layer of the same name on a different document, in the same book.

I created a new layer by duplicating Layer 1 called "Layer 2" in all the documents, and need to make one PDF of all docs on Layer 1 (Layer 2 hidden) and another with all docs on Layer 2 (Layer 1 hidden)

Hi Uwe,

Thanks tons for the idea, I think the non-printing might be the solution if there is no other... I'm still hoping someone might have a solution for how to make it work but that would be a last ditch...

Can anyone explain why this is a feature and not a bug?

Thanks!

Hi Klaas,

can you tell a bit more about the structure of your document?

Are references and targets on the same layer?

If yes, duplicating the layer should not cut the reference from the target.
