Custom bullet glyphs Read Out Loud incorrectly in Acrobat

Question

I made a bullet list style in InDesign using Ariel Black font Black Square (Unicode 25A0) character as the bullet character. I exported an interactive PDF and when using the Read Out Loud feature in Acrobat, it reads "Black square" instead of "Bullet" before each bulleted line. Shouldn't it read any custom bullet character as a bullet? This seems like a serious accessibility issue.

Reading the symbol as "black square" is correct. The standard was developed to force the recognition of the actual character used as a "bullet."

If you'd like to have it voiced as "bullet" instead, then there are 2 methods you can use:

In Acrobat, select the <Lbl> tag that surrounds the character, right-click, select Properties, and type "Bullet" in the field for Actual Text.
Run Acrobat Pro's Preflight utility and invoke the utility to label all bullets as "bullet." NOTE, however, that it will also put that Actual Text on numbered lists (which is a bug), so don't use this if there's a numbered list anywhere in the PDF.
