Is there a way to customize glyphs within InDesign? Specifically, I'd like to lengthen the en dash and reduce the asterisk in an Open Type font.

    No, you can't.

But you can create 2 character styles: one with a horizontal scale and another one which reduces the font size and apply these character styles to the en dash and the other one to the asterisk, using GREP styles to automatize the process.

Thank you. Are you aware of third party software apps that allow modifying glyphs within a font family?

I use an amazing InDesign plugin called Indyfont but I know that another one called Fontself can be used with Illustrator:

    https://www.fontself.com/make-fonts-on-desktop

Or you can use dedicated softwares like FontForge or FontLab but I think that for waht you want to do, Fontself or Indyfont are good enough.

in the future, to find the best place to post your message, use the list here, https://community.adobe.com/

p.s. i don't think the adobe website, and forums in particular, are easy to navigate, so don't spend a lot of time searching that forum list. do your best and we'll move the post (like this one has already been moved) if it helps you get responses.
