Cut selected image out of picture, can't use selection as path

Does anyone have an idea how I can simply cut this selection of the image out of its background, and use it as a new image?

I have carefully drawn a path around it but can never cut this out of the image. Pathfinder doesn't make a good selection, so I had to draw a the selection, but it seems not to be recognized as a path. I'm losing so much time on this... Thanks in advance! Jo

Hi jokev14504565 ,

first refine your path you are drawing, then open your Layers Panel.

There should be two objects:

The frame holding the image.

A polygon that is the path you are drawing.

Select the frame holding your image.

Do Cut.

Select the polygon.

Do Paste Inside.

Uwe

Personally, I would load the file in Photoshop, masking out the background and save as PSD or TIFF file.

Thanks, but is this the only way? I don't have Photoshop you see... Seems a bit silly to have to buy it for the occasion :-)

You can do as Laubender suggests, if you do not have Photoshop (or any other modern image editor) at your hands. It's just more complicated to handle with complex shapes. You create a irregularly shaped image frame.

And yes, if you have only Indesign at your disposal, Laubender's solution is the best you have.
