What error do you get when you try to open these files? Whom did you send the file?

It's not much direct help, but from this point forward,  whatever app you use... back up all your work, often. Save a new file at least every day on active projects. Create a ZIP archive of all your work at least once a month. Keep copies of recent archives in safe places, like cloud storage, a remote server or on a flash drive or DVD-R that's somewhere your computer isn't. 

Nothing replaces having useful backups.
