Data Merge—Indesign crashes when adding data source

I'm setting up a data merge of approximately 1300 contacts in a CSV file, but when I attempt to link the data source the app crashes ("Indesign has encountered a problem and needs to close"). I tried reducing the size of the merge down to just 100 contacts and it still crashes so I don't believe the size of the merge file is an issue (also I've merged lists this large in the past). Please help!

Maybe your INDD file got corrupted? 

Either create it from scratch - or try IDMLing way - Export As IDML, then open and save with a new name - so you won't overwrite original file.

Sounds like a problem with the .csv file itself. Maybe encoding or and illegal character in the file path.

Have you tried tab-delimited text instead?

    Thank you...I just tried uploading the CSV file we used for last year's mailing, which worked fine at the time, and ended up with the same error 😕😕 I will try tab deliminated and see if that helps any.

    OK, that's not a good sign. Obviously files that used to work generally should still work. I don't suppose there's an error log...
