Data Merge - result is overflowing page dimensions rather than starting a new row

Hello,

I am trying to create a data merge with multiple records on a document with a specific page width (1200mm). However, the result overflows the page dimensions (see picture below), rather than continuing on a new row...

I am doing this to create an optimal way to order future batches of product (serial-number) labels at a printing facility. 1200mm is the maximum printing width of the printer. The document has no specific height constriction so the the number of rows can be higher or lower depending on the implemented batch size via the spreadsheet.

What can I do to prevent this from happening? Is there a way to have the data merge results respect the page dimensions? Thank you in advance!

I completely echo comDesignSHi's post. If you are using an older version of Adobe InDesign, there is a known bug in earlier versions where Data Merge to multiple records will use the document's first created page size, rather than the page size in use at the time of export. I'm personally not a fan of merging to multiple records as I find there are many issues (including the one raised in the opening post) and have written a blog piece about it: https://colecandoo.com/2013/12/28/data-merge-multiple-record-madness/

Thank you both very much! Upgrading to the most recent version of Indesign did the trick! I was using the 2018 version before. The result follows the page's dimensions perfectly now:

If the answer wasn't in my post, perhaps it might be on my blog at colecandoo!

Which InDesign version do you have in use?

For older versions there was a reported issue associated with custom page sizes and Preview of multiple record layouts.

This problem can be demonstrated by changing the page dimensions after creating it - and i think you've done that. The multiple record preview snaps the multiple blocks to the designated margin position relative to where the edge of the page originally was when it was first set up (the original page dimensions).

Making the page narrower results in the output being placed off the page to the left. Making it wider offsets things to the right. Making it taller shifts things down, and so on.

The solution is to create a fresh document and set your dimensions, margins and columns in the setup, not after the fact. Copy your stuff to the fresh document, connect the data file, and go from there.
