Hit unknown key(s) and cursor turned to gray circle with diagonal line in it (meaning "no"?). Cannot do anything with document-seems to be locked.

It seems the system has crashed. You need to close and reopen the application and hope you haven't lost too much in the document. Always keep incrementally named back up copies of your files (externally and locally) so you can return to an earlier version if something like this happens.
