I am getting this block - lighter colored box. It has something to do with the drop shadow.

Composite printers can sometimes have problems with transparency flattening and color management. When you print from Acrobat try checking Print as Image in the Advanced tab.

Please provide more information about how you got to this point. Is the photo an image imported into an InDesign layout? If so what file format is it? Does the original image file have layers and transparency in it or has it been flattened? Are we looking at the file in InDesign or are we viewing what it looks like in a pdf?

The image is imported into a shape and a drop shadow is applied. It does not show on the screen or in the PDF. just in print.
