Duplicate Font Families - Reporting missing Montserrat fonts even though they are installed

I am running into a persistent font issue in InDesign 2026 (Windows) and I am trying to understand what is actually happening under the hood.

When I open my document, InDesign reports missing fonts, almost always Montserrat. When I check the font list, I see what appears to be two different Montserrat font families, and the font list itself is partially out of alphabetical order.

Here is the odd behavior:

  • One Montserrat family appears to only have a Regular style.

  • The other family contains Light, Bold, ExtraBold, etc.

  • Text in the document is assigned to Light, ExtraBold, etc., so InDesign cannot resolve those styles when it links to the “Regular-only” family.

  • Even after I reassign the correct Montserrat family and styles and save the file, the issue comes back when reopening the document.

I tried troubleshooting by:

  • Checking the Windows Fonts folder and removing duplicates.

  • However, Windows only shows one Montserrat family, the one with all variants.

  • This makes me suspect that Adobe Fonts might be injecting a second Montserrat family and overriding or confusing InDesign’s font resolution.

Questions:

1: How does InDesign prioritize Adobe Fonts vs locally installed fonts when both have the same family name?

2: Is there a way to force InDesign to always prefer the local font family?

3: Is there a known issue in InDesign 2026 with duplicate font families or font caching on Windows?

This behavior has made the document very annoying, so I am trying to determine whether this is a font management issue, an Adobe Fonts conflict, or a bug specific to InDesign 2026. Also some fonts appear out of alphabetical order which is also very annoying.

Any insight would be appreciated.
