Question

ECG / FOGRA 55 / CMYKOGV / 7c offset support

Anyone know if there are plans for InDesign to support CMYKOGV?

(as of 21.1 it is not supported)

Certification was completed back in 2021 after conclusion of a research project.

In essence expanded color gamut offset printing is the idea of increasing the color space of CMYK using 3 additional colors (orange, green, violet).

CMYKOGV as characterized by FOGRA 55 is proofable using Epson SureColor printers (P7570, P9570).

I have seen several printers already offering 7c offset print. These days it's basically to cut down on cost (to achieve almost complete Pantone coverage without having to resort to actually spot colors).

A first viable compatibility step would be for InDesign to export CMYKOGV in PDF/X-3/X-1a as 4C + spot color plates, since FOGRA 55 is based on FOGRA 51.

The obvious missing piece is for InDesign to actually support CMYKOGV, which in itself is going to be quite a journey as the color model is everything but intuitive.

Maybe the use of an exchange color space (CMYK or RGB) that maps 100% to the gamut of CMYKOGV and is only separated on export (or for separation preview) would be the way to implement that in a way that users will actually be able to deal with.

Hi @Josh Li , There are RGB Output Class color profiles for large gamut output. See this thread:

However, I would need an RGB exchange profile with the identical gamut as Fogra 55 and then rely on the service provider to use specific color conversion engines and strategies to get to a predictable outcome.

Or am I missing something?

You would have to make a custom RGB profile from a 7-color press sheet and have a RIP that’s capable of making the conversion to CMYKOGV at output.

RGB output profiles are the way color management is handled for large gamut composite printers—the output RGB profile I’m showing below is for the 10-color Epson 7000.

Adding an additional color space to InDesign (and the other print apps) would not be trivial. In addition to adding the space to Color Settings, Assign Profiles..., and Convert to Profile, there would have to be an CMYKOGV Transparency Blend Space, and a CMYKOGV Color Mode in Swatch Options.
