Edit Entire Index in Book

I have an catalogue that I built in InDesign. Due to the size, each section is a separate document, brought together in a book file. I've used InDesign's indexing tool to index each document. Is there any way to edit the entirety of index in one go (fix typos in references, etc)? I could open all of the documents in the book (which would then show the entire index if I ticked the box), but ID would probably freeze. I could generate the index as a text box to edit the references, but that doesn't affect the documents, so if I added references and regenerated it, the typos would reappear. Any ideas? Preferably, the entire index would show when only the book is open, and not the documents in it, but that isn't how it works currently. I'm using the latest version of InDesign for PC, Windows 10.

Have you tried opening all files together?

How much RAM do you have?

I have, yes. It does let me edit the whole index as desired, but I'm hoping there's a different way as it did vastly slow the program down.

Edit: I have 16GB RAM

Why would it probably freeze?

The files can be quite large (lots of images), and there's roughly 30 of them - if I opened them all together...
