Question

Editing stroke weight on a Table in Indesign is not making a global change - SO FRUSTRATING!

I’m on an iMac working in InDesign 20.1.1 and I have a table set up in a booklet that I had to squish vertically. Lots of copy was being added, which meant additional rows and the table was flowing off the bottom.  The only way to force the table to be the size for the page was to compress it vertically. When I did that, the horizontal lines were also altered.

I tried to fix the horizontal stroke lines so they were consistently .05” stroke weight, but no matter how I tried to do it it WILL NOT change them ‘globally’. Meaning, when I select/highlight the entire table, try to change just the bottom stroke to .05” to make the lines all the same ( as on other pages), it will appear as though I’ve changed it but when I highlight individual row, it’s not. I’ve had to go through and highlight/select each and every row to make this change which is INFURIATINGLY stupid.

And I tried this three different ways:

  • First manually, as described above - no global change
  • Second, I selected/highlighted the whole table, went to Table > Cell Options > Rows and Columns, changed the stroke to .05” - no global change
  • Third,  I selected/highlighted the whole table and went to my Stroke Tools window and selected .05” - no global change

There are SO many things that drive me crazy about Indesign but this is one of the dumbest. And there seems to be no work-around and trust me I’ve searched.

Please let me know if you’ve had this experience and if you have a fix, please, pretty please share it!

Thanks in advance. :)

My first suspicion is that a cell style is overriding the table style. Can you upload an sample, empty table?
