Question

Either the file does not exist, you do not have permission, or the file may be in use by another app

Suddenly I am getting this error message, "Either the file does not exist, you do not have permission, or the file may be in use by another application" when doing a routine "Update all links" with my illustrator document. I have resaved, saved the file to the desktop, and deleted all elements on the page, all I can think of. I need major help, I'm in the middle of a huge job. All the info that I see online is dated.

Thank you, SM

Have you had this problem before?

You mention "desktop" - do you have any "unusual" characters in user profile name - similar to what @Barb Binder mentioned?

Can you try to move to a "shorter" path, like "c:\test\" - or any other drive?

I actually re-downloaded the ID package and started over and so far no problems. I only lost 3 hours of work, and I have no idea why it corrupted but I thank you for helping me in a desperate situation!

I have not tried File > Open > Open Copy. What is that?

Open the File menu, choose Open and choose Open Copy.

Sorry, I don't know what that means. I have a 150 page document and I use "Update all links" all day long. I can not update my links individually, which is why this error message is hurting me greatly.

Hi @defaultmovq9b052dyz:

  • What is the name of the file? Are there any unusual characters in the file name?
  • What about in the illustrator file names?
  • Have you tried File > Open > Open Copy?

No unusual characters, the file name is 110623_MORP_Park Sign Manual_template.indd and the Ill. file name is PARKID1_Colors.ai.

I have not tried File > Open > Open Copy. What is that?

Thank you for your help.

Are you working in a Dropbox, Onedrive or other cloud storage folder? If so, you must turn off any smart sync features so the files are available immediately and not downloaded on demand.

Bob,

The client uploaded this job to me by Dropbox, but I have it saved to my computer and re-packaged. I am not familiar with smart synch features, this is the first time I've seen this error.
