End note error report

When I try to change the color of the first end note in this book this is the error I get and inDesign closes. There are a lot more lines between the top and the bottom. I just  brought in photos of the first and last lines. It appears to be the only endnote that gives me this problem. There are other endnotes that I have changed from black to red with no problem. I do have a lot of endnotes that I need to change the color. I've been doing it one by one because I haven't found a way to do it all at once. Perhaps someone can give me a simple way to make the change.

I do get an error when I open inDesign that says "Document my be damaged. Do you want to open it anyway?" Are the two related or am I looking at a separate problem?

I once worked on a set of complex medical procedure manuals with/for my wife.

Sorry, make that my ex-wife. Not saying there's any connection. 😄

Anyway, you can try the automatic recovery, but it sounds as if all your problems are tracing to a corrupted ID file, which is fairly common. When you've recovered the file and saved it under a new name (don't EVER overwrite working files when something like this happens), open the last good version you have and try the export to IDML/reopen and save as INDD gambit. It very often fixes broken ID files and ends glitchy behavior like you're seeing.

First, try this on a copy of the file: save or export it to IDML. Then open that file and save it under a new name as a regular INDD file. That process often fixes document faults, clears out deadwood material, cures document corruption etc.

That kind of corruption can cause the weird behavior you're seeing, so you may not need to do anything else.

However, you may want to look at Endnote Options under Type. This menu defines end notes, including the style applied to all of them. It should use a single defined style (not [Basic Paragraph] or a body font, for example), and updating this style should update all instances of end notes in one step. (If it's not using a defined style, create one and apply it.)

I haven’t got to trying your solution yet. I’ve had too many interruptions and I would need to clarify some of the instructions. I’m on shaky grounds with my wife already for messes I’ve made and it’s too cold here right now for the dog house. 😊 But this message just came up on the screen and maybe it will solve some things. It says “Do you want to start automatic recovery? Options are Yes-No-Cancel. MY next step is ?
I just want to say I put together a book for my wife once before and everything went smoothly. All these problems are new to me. It’s a learning experience for sure. Hope I’m soon done learning.
