Endnotes have become plain text. References in the document disappeared

Question

I have Win 11 and the last version of InDesign 2025 (which is getting me crazy).
I had a document with food notes, then I converted them into endnotes, which worked fine. After a few weeks (and several editings), there are no more superscript numbers and the endnotes have become plain text. I cannot convert them back, because Indesign says there are no endnotes.

When I insert new notes, they simply start as... new notes, right on from the beginning with number 1.

It's possible, that your document got corrupted - try IDMLing - export as IDML, open, save with a new name - do not overwrite your original file.

If it won't help - do you still have reference numbers in the main text?
