EPS file becomes a string of asterisks when exporting to pdf

Hi. I'm trying to export an indesign file to pdf, but one of the contents is different after the export. I've checked that the linked file is the correct one. My version of Indesign is CS5 and my computer is an early 2008 Imac.

I can not show you the original eps file sadly, because I can not risk someone stealing it, but I can show you the result when I export the file to pdf. The center of the image should be a text but is instead a series of asterisks.

Edit: I've noticed that this also happens when I set the eps file to high quality inside indesign but shows correctly when I set it to typical display. why???

EPS is a horribly archaic format. Open it in Illustrator and save it as PDF/X-4 and place that in InDesign.

Can you rasterize it in Photoshop? My guess is the text is in a font that in not embedded in the EPS.

Try placing the EPS in Illustrtor as a link, then clicking Embed in the Control panel. Also try placing as a link then go to Object > Flatten Transparency. In the option select Convert All Text to Outlines.

The asterisks are actually a compound path in illustrator so I guess it's not text... but I've been able to solve the problem by saving the file as pdf and it looks like it should. Computers operate in misterious ways...

It showed up as a series of asterisks on illustrator too, but I've been able to save it as pdf on another application! Thank you very much!
