Question

Every file is being opened in InDesign 2020 since the last update

Dear community and moderators,

we are a design agency, so we have the current and also the older versions (2014-2020) of InDesign on our systems. Since the last update of InDesign, every file is being opened automatically in InDesign 2020 for some reason, no matter which version it was created in. This Issue occurs on all of our workstations (we have 6).

Changing the standard program to open InDesign files doesn't help.

Are we the only ones with this issues or is there anyone else experiencing this problem? I didn't manage to find anyone else reporting this issue.

Thank you very much in advance,

Andre Taissin

You just need to change the Windows default app that opens when you double click INDD. But if you have multiple versions, it's best to forbid double clicking to open files, it leads to too many headaches.

Thanks for your reply, however this doesn't help. We've tried it on several machines. It still sticks to the InDesign 2020.
Double clicking worked just fine for us before, as long it was opening in the latest version. 😉

It would help to know the OS. I think this is expected (and very annoying) on Windows.

Rorohiko used to have a program called Soxy that would automatically open the file in the original version, but it is no longer usable on 64 bit OS systems. Markzware has a utility that at least seems to offer a warning, and perhaps does more.

Thanks Peter. We are on Windows 10 64bit here.

Sorry, I think I didn't express myself properly.  Before the recent (or one of the recent) updates, every file was automatically opened in InDesign 2021. Which is what we want in most cases, as we convert the old versions to the new one anyway.

Now it stopped doing that and instead everything is being opened in the 2020 version.

So we just need it to go back to how it was before. 🙂
