Question

Every time a file is opened, ID thinks it's been changed

Is there a way to tell InDesign not to flag every file that's opened as if there have been changes that have been made?

It's infuriating... did I accidentally make a change? Did an image change without being updated? Who knows?

This needs to be corrected.

Hey guys -

Ok, did some experimenting - it's not with every file, but for some (that I save) I re-open it, and it things it's changed again.

Is there a way to track down what, exactly, ID thinks has been updated?

thanks

Hi

Some ideas for tracking it down:

  • Does it happen a second and third time on the same file when you open, see the asterisk, save, close, and reopen? Or does it work as expected after doing it once?
  • How do you reopen the files? From File > Open or from Bridge or from Finder/File Explorer?
  • Do you have more than one version of InDesign installed? I do. To keep myself straight, I put the newest version in interface I prefer (light) and the older ones in a different interface (dark). Are you opening the file in the same version in which it was created?
  • Try to keep some notes on what you see and maybe we can help. The most common scenario is what you've already heard — if you open a file in a newer version, this is expected behavior.

Hi Jane -

  • Happens every time I open the same file(s) - even if I Save.
  • Reopening from different sources (including bridge, or double clicking in Finder) makes no difference.
  • I only have one version installed (up to date)

thanks!

What SJRiegel describes is "as designed." Whenever you open an InDesign file in a newer format, the file is completely changed. An InDesign file is more like a database file. It's not like a graphic format like Illustrator uses.

If this is happened in 2020 with files created in 2019 or earlier, this is expected behavior. The change is the new version of InDesign - when you save, it will be in 2020 format instead of the (2019 or earlier) format it was created in.
