Question

Exporting file size is incorrect

Hi,

I use merge to get data into specific positions within a design, I then export as a PDF and then open with Photoshop. However for some reason and this never happened before, but the file size changes and every single item is in the correct place. I have 48 x 40mm squares with names within them and they have to be in a specific position, however it would seem the file size changes every so slightly which is extremely annoying. Any ideas how to fix this.

Maybe this will help...I have left my template borders on to show you how far out the template moves.

There is nothing wrong how th program works, it works with full pixel sizes.

But why PNG? Why? Export as PDF and print from there! Why PNG? I cannot understand what you want to gain with PNG files?

    Hi,

I cannot use a PDF file on my printer, so I export a PDF from ID and then open it with Photoshop to save as a high res JPG. From there I can move the design into my Print Template.

I will try the setting you have suggested and see if that works.

The last time I did this was probably before the latest set of major upgrades and it was always OK, exported PDF, opened with Photoshop, placed those files into my templates from print. No issue with sizing etc, but now something is not right.

Just FYI I print food, so the food goes on a flatbed in pre-set positions and the printer will print in an accurate x & Y positioning, this is why my artwork needs to be 100% accurate. Something during export is not right I think, Probably a setting.

What size is it and what size is it supposed to be?

Why open the PDF in photoshop at all? why not just save your file to a jpeg/png etc. directly from InDesign - or directly from the pdf?

Can you elaborate on what you're doing and your workflow?

Hi, I have tried all options, JPG, PNG and PDF and none of them are exported the exact same size, we are talking small sizes but enough to throw it all out, I can make a small screen video if you like to show you.

I cannot recommend to export from InDesign to JPG as it is poor quality.

What you need to understand that any rasterized image (which is EVERY image from Photoshop) can only have sizes in full pixels, there exist nothing as a half or part pixel as PIXEL is the acronym for Picture Element. Pixel is the smallest part of any rasterized image.

I still recommend use PDF/X-4 exported from InDesign for the most purposes especial for printing or importing to any other application.

What is the purpose why you open it in Photoshop?

If you want to check a PDF, do it in Acrobat Pro.

Hi, Thanks for replying. I export as a PDF to maintain the file size and then open with Photoshop to place the exports within another template that I use for my printer.

My printer prints items that are in specific locations on a 330mm x 600mm area, so my exports are placed into that file in photoshop, thank goodness i did that otherwise all my prints would be out of line.

    300dpi - 330mm x 600mm

Print from PDF and nothing else. it is nonsense to convert a PDF anything else has better quality.
