exporting to pdf error/image sizes?

I'm trying to export a book file for print to pdf (Acrobat), but get that error that there might be something wrong with assets. I assume this is a message about the size of the images, since i placed them from cc libraries. I thought they were automatically resized when i placed them in a smaller size...maybe not.

 

So big question is, how do I downsize all those images? Do I have to do them one at a time by the tedious process of downloading them, opening in photoshop, resizing them (and not knowing what size they should be, since they are currently placed in the appropriate size within the text of the book), and then, how do I replace them where they are? DO i have to reformat my entire book again, using all the resized images?

 

(I was so excited to be using the libraries for formatting my book, rather than how I used to download and size each image before placing them from file menus....now I'm not so excited anymore....what's the best way to do this and prevent it from happening again with the next book?)

You will downsize the images when you export a PDF. You could do it in Photoshop.

What is exactly the message you get? I doubt that this has something to do with the sizes of the images.

What does the preflight panel tell you?

How do I downsize the images before exporting, if they are already placed? Is that done in ID? I couldn't get to the settings in Acrobat, as it gave me the error before converting. I can't find the error message, now>just a "failed to export," and mentioning assets.
The preflight panel showed no errors, same with the links panel.

Since posting this question, I already downsized them in photoshop, and am now replacing them throughout the book, so...
I just tested the doc by opening what i have so far in Acrobat, and it opened fine this time. So I still think the number of large images must have caused it (but not sure, still).

 

What I still need to know is if placing them from CC libraries, and resizing them down on the page means they have actually been reduced, and if there's a way to do this downsizing automatically. If not, then using the cc libraries panel is not actually a time-saver at all. I still have to download the file, open it in PS, resize, save, and then in ID, place it, adjust it. (I do use copy and paste into the other locations I want them in the book, after getting the image the right size).

 

But if they are being placed and resized smaller on the page, when their actual size is quite large, and I have, say 60 copies of the chapter and text separator images in the book, doesn't that make the file huge?

This book file was strictly using CC library to place them on the page. ID crashed a few times while I was working on the book format, and it also took longer to save than normal. The file comes in pretty clean as I export from Scrivener to .docx and I replace all the fonts and styles and remove everything not being used. I've done four other books before this one in the last week, with no problems like that, but in those, i only used file/place from my computer, using images that were already downsized. That seems to be the only difference, which is why i suspect it is file size. I don't know for sure.
