File > Open is super slow

Indesign 17.3 on Windows 11. When I start Indesign and go to File > Open, it takes 6 minutes to bring up a window and show me some files. The same thing happens if I choose Save As, or Export to PDF, or anything that requires Windows Explorer.

This is a new Dell XPS I got 4 weeks ago. For the first two weeks, Indesign worked normally, and then it began having problems with File > Open. The computer has 64gb of RAM and a 1TB SSD. It should be really fast. I've reset preferences at least four times now. I've checked Dell support and patched anything that needed patching. Any ideas?

Correct answer Kenneth C. Benson

I think the problem is Google Drive. I'm using the desktop version to sync my work files. While testing program interactions, I turned it off earlier today, but I just discovered it never actually quit. I had to turn it off in Task Manager. As soon as I did, Indesign was able to get to File Explorer instantly.

Google Drive was one of the programs I installed after Indesign (and Illustator and Photoshop). Indesign actually worked well for a week or so, and then I installed some more programs, including Google Drive. I've used Google Drive on other computers for years without problems, but I've also read that it can slow your computer down.

Do you have any plugins installed?

Are you running as an Admin on the computer?

Where are you opening or saving files to? Local HD or external drive/server?

Thanks, Kevin

I added a script, BreakTextThread.jsx, when I was working on a book with endnotes, and the client told me the endnotes had to restart at the beginning of every chapter. That worked great. But no plugins yet.

Yes, I believe I'm Admin. I'm not sure how I would set up a non-admin account. I'm the only user in a business of one person.

I'm opening and saving to the Documents folder on the C: drive.

Was the javascript added before or after you started experiencing issues opening/saving files?
