Question

fillable pdf not saving properly

I have made a fillable form using the straight ahead prepare form function. No weird functions added. However, it won’t let the end user save properly. For example, they type in their name field but it won’t save, but go to the next line and put an address it saves. Go further down the page to another line and again, it won’t save, but type on yet another line and it will.  It’s as if it alternates between lines to save or not. If I go to the save as, it’s grey out as if it doesn’t even recognize there were changes made. BUT, if I just try and close the document it will then give me the prompt “Do you want to save the changes you made in the document…..” Please advise what is going on and how to correct this?

Fillable forms created in InDesign can only be exported for use as Interactive pdfs. These pdfs can only be read by Acrobat 9 or above and even then I've found that they can be unreliable. You are probably better off creating your fillable forms directly in a print pdf that you've created from InDesign. They are far more reliable than ones created with InDesign as Interactives but you should be warned that there are some pdf readers out there that won't even recognize the forms created this way. A disclaimer should always be added to the end users that they should download the latest Acrobat Reader if they have trouble with the forms.

Just one added tip. If you have to make edits to your original InDesign file you can avoid having to do over the forms in Acrobat by first creating a new pdf from the corrected inDesign with a new name. Open the original pdf with the forms and click on the Organize Pages tool. You'll then see all of the pages in the pdf. Click on a page that you want to replace with the newly edited page and choose Replace from the options at the top. Navigate to the other pdf you made and choose it and in the dialog box you'll get in the replace with area make sure that you choose the page number of the page you want to do the replacing. The page will be replaced and the forms will not be affected.

Sorry, I should have stated it was created in InDesign, exported as a print pdf to avoid the interactive issues and then taken into Acrobat Pro. When in Acrobat I have tried using "prepare form" and also just creating text boxes from scratch. The issue still occurs no matter which way I do it. Since I test it in my own software before release, it is going through the latest version. And it doesn't matter if I'm in Reader or Pro. I'm baffled why it is doing this.

I'm sorry but I don't get this workflow at all so let's back up.

Why are you not taking advantage of InDesign forms functions? For a simple form these tools will get you 90%-100% of the way to a completed and fully functional form.

Export as Adobe PDF (interactive) and you should be good to go.

Otherwise, if you are indeed going to use Acrobat's tools for this, you'll get way more help in the Acrobat forum.
