"Finding linked file" dialogue box when opening document with tables but not linked files

Recently I've been having the following dialogue box (see screenshot) with "finding linked file 217 of 340". Now the issue is that there are no linked file in that document, its only a table that is placed. There arent any image, any pictogram, the link window is empty etc.... It seems to be counting every single line as an independant "linked file" because pages with smaller tables seem to be looking for less "linked files". So the opening of these indesign files sometimes take 10min of waiting, the longer the table, the more time, eventhough there is only a table in it (over multiple pages). Is this part of an update of indesign? How come tables are now considered linked files and why doest it take so much time to open those tables? The indesign file weight 14kb, which is bigger than other files but still, the opening time is crazy.

Now one of the problem is indeed that our files are all located on a serveur, but still, those files with tables are the only ones causing problems, while 300mb photoshop files are fine. I unfortunately can't share the indesign as they contain information i cannot distribute (value of investment funds etc...).

Has anyone else encountered this message? I haven't found anything about it online.

I'd try the following:
Export the document to IDML. Open the IDML file as document and save to a new name.

FWIW: Had no issues at all to open your Test-tables2.indd document.

If you open the document and it say you are missing links, continue to open. Then click on the links links panel. It will show the missing links. Click on one of the missing links. Look at the links info and it will give you the path where the original link is located.

Hi @Youn5CB2 ,

screenshot 50 is showing InDesign Tagged Text.

Tagged Text is an export and also an import option.

However, this alone cannot explain what's going wrong.

What we need is a sample InDesign document where you see the issue.

Ok so I've taken a document and pretty much searched and replace any letter to x and any number to 1 so its pretty much useless now. So here is a sample document. The issue is, this error doesn't happen every single time. Like after randomizing the document I saved it and opened it again and no delay this time. So maybe somehow indesign saves some cache data? Thank you for your help.

Just as an FYI, everyone in the thread sees all posts, so you only need to post once to reach everyone unless you have more to add.

I opened your sample file without a problem other than missing fonts so not much help there. I did review the file history, though, and I see this was originally created in 2016 (I believe) in version 7 (which was CS5) and has been converted by opeing in newer versions periodically since. That might have something to do with the problem -- crud can accumulate in a file that goes through a lot of changes. It might help to export tyhe file to .idml, open that and save as a new .indt template with a new name (don't overwrite the old one, just in case) and see if the problem goes away.

No, we have two ways to make the tables. For the extra large ones we receive a textfile generated from the program they use to track those funds with embeded unicode that tells indesign which cell style to apply. The code looks like this : "<CellStyle:\[None\]><StylePriority:0><CellStart:1,1><ParaStyle:table\_sup\_3b\_body>12,27<CellEnd:>" (and see screenshot). This was all coded a while back by someone who's not with us anymore and honestly i have no idea how that works, it just odes. So we just place those in a text box and all the right cell styles get in place. We have another kind of table for which we enconter the same "file link" issue and its juste an existing empty table in which we copy paste from excel and more or less manually set the styling (remove all styles, add a different style manually for the first column and the last one as well as a few others which have symbols in them (stars for the rating).

Had i encontered the problem only with the tables with the weird import methode, I would have assumed the problem came from there and wouldn't look any further because only 2 people have to deal with those tables and thats only once a week. But, we have the same problem with the templates of our other publications (the one with simple copy paste tables) and thats 8 people working with them on a daily basis.

Maybe one of our coding experts will recognize how that code is supposed to work, I don't. I also don't see any actual data included in it so it looks to me like some sort of script that just sets the styling.

It's really hard to know what's going on without something more concrete to look at. Would it be possible for you to share a template file without client data? I suppose propbably not since there could be fraud issues.

In Preferences under File Handling, there is a check box to Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files.

If that box is checked, changes to the spreadsheet or text document can be updated via the Links panel in InDesign.

For this to work seamlessly, all InDesign formatting has to be done via styles. (For spreadsheets, Table Styles and Cell Styles must be used)

If this is not what you want, uncheck that box before placing the spreadsheets.

Thank you for your answer but I don't think thats it. I just checked the files and I don't have this option checked. When this option is checked the word document or spreadsheet appears as a link in the link window. Its not the case here.
