Fixed Layout EPUB Export Resamples JPEG Images and Significantly Increases Resolution

Images inflating from 1800 x 2406 to 7200 x 9746 during Fixed Layout EPUB export for Apple Books. How do I stop InDesign from resampling placed JPEG images during export?

I haven't been able to export. I tried everything you suggested and more but no luck. I don't understand this

Hard to know as the information about what you tried, what’s failing and how it’s failing isn’t shown.

After changing the .epub to .zip and I examined the zip file, I am seeing 2images. One is the actual image I put in there. The other is an inflated ghost image Indesign is adding in there. Tried alot of tricks to exclude it and export again but to no avail

    Hi @endymo,

I wanted to follow up and check whether the issue has been resolved after trying the expert's suggestions.

If you're still seeing the image dimensions increase during export, please let us know what you observed after trying the suggested steps, and we'll be happy to investigate further.

    Looking forward to your update.

Check the Resolution setting under the Conversion settings in the Fixed Layout EPUB export dialogue. It sounds as though the objects are being rasterised at 300 ppi, which is why the pixel dimensions are increasing so dramatically.

To retain the original JPEG, select its frame and go to:

Object > Object Export Options > EPUB and HTML

Under Preserve Appearance From Layout, choose Use Existing Image for Graphic Objects. This should keeps compatible JPG, PNG and GIF files unchanged and uses CSS to position/style the container. Also make sure Ignore Object Export Settings is not enabled during export.

Check the Actual PPI and Effective PPI in the Links panel as well. If the image has been enlarged, cropped, rotated or given transparency/effects in InDesign, the exporter may create a new raster image to preserve that appearance. In that case, crop, rotate and size the JPEG externally, then place it at the required size without frame effects. Apple also recommends preparing images at their final crop, size and rotation before importing them into the book-creation application.

You can confirm what InDesign is doing by changing .epub to .zip, extracting it and examining the files in the images folder.
