FIxing Page Numbering in a Book

have a book where everything was working correctly in regard to page numbering. I had printed it out several times. Suddenly, after making some speling and gramer fixes, the page numbering is all screwed up in the book and I need to find out how to fix it.

In Chapter 1, the third file in the book, the book Window now says there are 24 pages. The file has 23 pages, numbered 1-23.

(The book has pictures spanning the spreads at the start of the chapters so those chapters start on even pages)

Chapter 2, starts on the left side of the spread as desired but starts with page 25 on the left page.

Chapter 3, also starts on the left side of the spread with page 53. I get two spreads with 2 pages then page 57 is on the right page of the spread with no page on the left, something like this in the page display for the file:

X X

X X

   X (????)

X X

.....

Every page after the shift is then on the wrong side of the the spread.

How can I get InDesign to thing the file with 23 pages actually has 23 pages and not 24.

How can I get InDesign to make all the spreads start on the correct side of the page?

  • Check your book settings to see if you have turned on Insert Blank Pages.
  • Also, in the same dialog box, see if you turned off Automatically Update Page & Section Numbers. If so, update all numbers manually.
  • For pages that must remain a spread, in the Pages panel, select the pages, and turn off Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle. Note: this could leave a break in the page layout; Allow Document Pages to Shuffle can cause strangle page layout breaks too.

There could be an number of things going on here.

Check your 23-page section to make sure that auto-flow hasn't added an extra page. If the document is indeed 23 pages, try exporting it as IDML, re-saving as a new InDesign file, and updating it in the book.

Look for a checkbox to Allow Pages to Shuffle - this may fix the one errant right-hand page. If it dones't, then use the IDML procedure on this one as well.

Windows 10 and above have print to PDF so try that and see what the resulting PDF looks like vs what the editor shows.

@Vegan Fanatic I'm not sure that this has anything to do with the OP's problem. Can you clarify?
