Fonts Missing Again After Windows Update(KB5089573) in InDesign 21.4 (Times New Roman, Calibri, Univers)

Today, 27 May 2026, I updated to InDesign 21.4 and, sure enough, the Times New Roman issue has been resolved. Unfortunately, Univers Bold is now missing.
I reported the problem in November 2025. Since then, I’ve had to keep updating my files converting OTF to TTF. Following a new InDesign update sometime early this year, Calibri and Wingdings 2 were also missing.

An hour after this InDesign 24.1 update, Windows also released an update: KB 5089573, and now none of the fonts – TNR, Calibri and Univers – could be found. I uninstalled the Windows version and upon restarting, OS builds 26200.8524 and 26100.8524 were installed.
Everything was working normally again (except for Univers). An hour later, a new Windows update with the same issue appeared, and all the fonts were missing again.
"This cumulative update for Windows 11, versions 25H2 and 24H2 (KB5089573), includes production-quality improvements." That certainly doesn’t apply to me.

Once again, InDesign is altering the custom paragraph styles set by the user. Univers has been changed to a font that is not installed on the computer. That should be prohibited.

The update worked well for a few hours, but then Windows released a new update that messed up the handling of fonts again (after all, handling text is a basic function of InDesign).

In short, the update 24.1 is a failure with regard to font use because InDesign still relies on Windows.

I’m back to where I was at the end of November last year. All changes in my files have been undone (when I open them). Countless hours of (boring) work done for nothing.

Hello, Why does InDesign replace missing fonts with other fonts that are not installed on the system instead of preserving the original font reference and warning the user?

    Hi @drist029ity,

Thank you for bringing this up. I tested this behavior on InDesign 21.4 running on Windows 11 by creating a document with a font, saving it, removing the font from Creative Cloud Desktop, and then reopening the file. In my testing, InDesign displayed the Missing Fonts dialog and did not directly substitute the font.

Could you please confirm your InDesign version and Windows version? Also, are you seeing this behavior with a single font, multiple fonts, or all missing fonts? Does it occur with a specific document or across all files?

In the meantime, please try resetting InDesign preferences manually (by following the video at the bottom of the article) and clearing the font cache, then check if the behavior persists:

Please let us know the results, and we'll continue investigating.

By chance, I discovered that only the files I’ve edited since 1 December 2025 (converting OTF to TTF) are showing the same missing fonts (TNR/Calibri) again. So I have to edit all those modified files again. It is quite possible that other users have had the same experience. Files saved before this date that I haven’t edited only show Univers as a missing font.
The font Univers comes from the following source: Copyright (c) 1987, 1991, 1998 Adobe Systems Incorporated.  All Rights Reserved. Univers is a trademark of Linotype-Hell AG and/or its subsidiaries.
It’s up to you to decide whether that’s a reliable source.

When creating a new document, the basic paragraph style was still set to TNR.OTF, but changing this to TTF when no file is open resolves the issue. Of course, that’s not how it should be.

In the font menu, the top most frequently used fonts have all become OTF files; these are not installed on the computer.

Clearing the font.dat cache does not help. What does work is saving a file with many missing fonts as an IDML file and loading it into Affinity. The paragraph styles are all indicated with the correct TTF.
I have mentioned this before: how can InDesign automatically adjust paragraph styles using fonts that are not installed on the user’s computer? These styles are personal settings by the user. No Windows update should change that. Nor InDesign.

Adobe certainly doesn’t deserve any praise for the way they’ve handled this font issue.

    Hi @gosia,

Thank you for the additional details. To help us investigate this further, could you please share a short screen recording demonstrating the complete workflow, from launching InDesign and opening/creating a document through to where the missing font issue appears? Additionally, please include the Type > Find/Replace Font dialog and the Basic Paragraph Style settings in the recording, if possible.

We appreciate your patience and the thorough testing you've already done.

    Latest Windows 11 version; InDesign 21.4. x64

After opening a file, the following appears: The ‘name of document’ contains ‘name of the font’ is not available (translate from Dutch). Basic Paragraph font, see image. The previous Image had the text “Files modified after December 2025”

    Example new file.

We are having this exact same issue with the Roboto font. The entire creative studio and editorial team are having the problem.

    Hi @gosia,

Sorry to hear that you're running into font issues again and thank you for reporting this.

To help us understand whether this is related to the previously fixed issue or a new font-recognition problem, could you please confirm whether the issue affects only existing documents or if it also occurs in newly created documents?

Could you also let us know where the Univers font is coming from, such as its foundry or font provider?

Additionally, it would be very helpful if you could share:

    1. A screenshot of the Missing Fonts dialog.
    2. A screenshot of Type > Find/Replace Font showing how Times New Roman, Calibri, and Univers are being identified.

Please also try clearing the font cache and re-adding the font again to see if that helps. Ref: https://helpx.adobe.com/fonts/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-illustrator-indesign.html

These details will help us investigate this further and compare it against the earlier issue.

    Looking forward to your update.

    Thanks,
    Abhishek
