Fonts not displaying in ePub when viewing in Kindle Previewer

Hi,

I can see that this topic has been discussed a few times, but finding multiple answers.

I'm using the latest version of InDesign on Creative cloud and exporting a book using ePub to be published via Amazon Publishing Services. I have downloaded Amazon's Kindle Previewer to simulate the pages and I'm also using Apples iBooks which isn't having the following issues.

The fonts I am using are Avenir, Avenir Next and Georgia all are which are either system or library fonts on my computer and activated in my Font Book and are TrueType.

All my paragraph and character styles are displaying fine apart from the ones using 'Avenir Next Demi Bold' and 'Georgia Bold'. I am a little confused especially when all the other weights in those families seem to be displaying fine and presumably embedded but those aren't.

I've tested a PDF export and all fonts have embedded and also when I run the PDF through Amazon's 'Kindle Create' I don't get the issue.

Any suggestions or direction would be great!

J-P

Latest version of InDesign? What exact version?

Fixed layout or reflowable? If reflowable what version?

Always use Opentype to minimize font issues. PDF is irrelevant here.

And if it works with Kindle Create why not just use that?

Hi Bob,

Thank you for your reply, I'm using version 14.0.2 of InDesign. Exporting as a Fixed layout using version EPUB 3.0.

Fair point on the Opentype version of the font families, will need to source these. Do you think this is the main issue?

My only question about using the Kindle Create and uploading the PDF I export from InDesign does this limit or reduce the experience of the final book? I've found that Kindle Create doesn't import the bookmarks from the PDF so would have to recreate my TOC which is fine.

The biggest problem with fixed layout epub is the lack of quality readers. Even Adobe’s own Adobe Digital Editions is lousy. The Apple Books app (formerly iBooks) is about the best in class. If it works there, I lay the blame for issues on the reader app for issues.
