when i put image, circle continuing and freezing happens

then eventually indesign shuts down

I can confirm that the issue appears to be specific to InDesign 21.5.1. After downgrading to version 21.4.1, placing images and saving files work normally even with the Generative AI options enabled.

Could you please confirm the exact InDesign version and operating system/version you’re using? In the meantime, please try the suggestions shared by the experts, particularly disabling the Generative AI options in InDesign Preferences, restarting InDesign, and then testing the image placement workflow again.

I’d also like to confirm that this is a known issue, and the product team is already working on a fix. You can refer to this related discussion for additional context: InDesign freezes when placing/updating placed files.

This has been happening for us for about 6 months now. Cannot figure out how to disable generative AI.

Cannot figure out how to disable generative AI.

Can you please elaborate on this… What happens if you disable Generative AI options in preferences? Or do you mean that if you disable the settings, the generative AI options are still being applied?
