Gradient feather tool is not working properly in InDesign

I am trying to create a radial gradient feather in InDesign in a shape and it is not working properly on my mac.  

It will only let me have a linear gradient and it can only be in black and white. I can't change the color.  I have tried it with a shape in a new document and I get the same result. 

Help!!

Have you used this method successfully before?  If not, it may be (based on your description) that you are using the wrong tool for what you are trying to do.

Maybe what you want is not Gradient Feather, but Gradient.

yes, I know how to use both tools and the difference and both tools are not working properly, actually.

1. Gradient Feather - will not allow me to choose Radial, only Linear - every time I pick radial it reverts back to linear. also, under "Settings for" It only allows me to choose 'Object'. If I try to choose stroke or fill, it reverts back to Object. 

2. Gradient Tool - only black and white. Radial works there, but only in black and white.

This all works fine on my office computer, which is a PC.

Try restoring your InDesign preferences:

Trash, Replace, Reset, or Restore the application Preferences
