Gradient text colour

Am i correct that with multi line text, i can not add a gradient to each line.....the gradient is applied the text box contents as a whole itself?

Secondly, i dont seem to able to apply a gradient to text the same as applied to an object. Looking at attached, both the text and object box are the same hieght, however theres no correlation with the box on the left and the text on the right, although the same type/angle are applied
