Grey blocks in layout, crunchy title type

I have big grey blocks/parallelograms in an existing document that I have to toggle to get them to go away. Then they come back.

The headline text starts out fine and at the end of the line the lettering looks like it's fractal, with white gashes that look like another font is fighting with mine.

I have updated ID this morning with the latest, and the problem continues.

If this is a new 'feature', how do I turn it off?

    Sounds like Adobe InDesign GPU Performance feature enhancements kicking in by default. If they are enabled, disable them and check again.
