Question

Have to manually scroll through fonts

Anyone else have the issue of not being able to search for fonts unless you scroll down and manually click on them first? It is such a massive time waster! If I'm looking for Montserrat for example, I have to scroll down the list to Montserrat and select it, only then can I search for it in future by typing it into the fonts box. This has been an issue for at least the last 3 releases of InDesign.

There is a fix.

Instead of scrolling, just highlight the text you want to change, then start typing the name of the font you want in the Font: options box. I'll bet you a nickel by the time you get to the first "t" in Montserrat, that'll be the font you see in the drop-down list immediately below the options box.

Hope this helps,

Randy

Hi Randy,

Unfortunately not - that's what I'm saying. Whether I have highlighted the text I want to change beforehand or not, when I start to type in a font in the font options box, it won't let me. I will try to write out Montserrat, and it will act as if there is nothing that has "Mont" in it by the time I get to the first t, as if it's not in my font list. But then when I manually scroll down to Montserrat, it's there and I can select it. After I've done so, I can then search for Montserrat.

Cheers for getting back anyway,

Lulu

Hmmm. I just checked that with InDesign CC2019 on my MacMini and Windows laptop, and IDCC2020 on my laptop and it's running like clockwork. And I'm a trainer, so there are no custom settings loaded into my systems to make that happen.

That's not to say it's not working like that on your system, of course. I'm sure it is, or you wouldn't be here asking for help.

One common issue with InDesign is that the preferences can get a bit scrambled and things don't work the way they're supposed to. The common fix for that, if you don't have a lot of custom preferences which would need to be recreated, is to rebuild the preferences and cache files. You can read more about this by clicking the link below:

Rebuilding InDesign Preferences and Cache Files

If you do have a lot of custom preferences, be advised that you'll also blow those away when you reset your system to the baseline setup. So you'll want to take note of any custom settings before you rebuild preferences to get yourself back to your custom setup.

This is one of those standard "karmic" fixes we recommend around here because it can fix lots of little anomalies in how a particular InDesign setup is working.

Hoping this will help you,

Randy
