i have this icon at my curser and can not get rid of it! what does it mean?

    Seems to me to be that ID is trying to place a generic file.

    The parenthesis generally show up if the placed object is going to be placed into an existing object.

    In your case the text block below your cursor.

    Hit the Esc key to cancel the place function.

    If it wasn't for the parenthesis it would be the Page Tool – see screen shot.

    As you can't get rid of it I suggest you reset your InDesign preferences.
